Good communication is an integral part of digital learning. We lose a lot of verbal and visual context when teaching online so Google Classroom offers multiple channels where you can talk to your students and facilitate clearer communication. Before we share guides, here are a few reminders:
Clarify your intention. When crafting a message, make sure your purpose is clear. Are you explaining an idea, encouraging participation or providing critical feedback? Are you checking-in with their wellbeing? Communicating online is more difficult because of the lack of physical presence. Make sure your intention is clearly expressed.
Meet them where they are. Conversational and personalized communication is proven to be more effective rather than dry and formal messages. Your personality should show when your students are reading your content, messages and instructions. Make them hear you as they are reading it.
Be consistent. Set common times, routines, and platforms for your announcements and other forms of communication. When should they expect feedback on their assignments? Where should they check for your urgent announcements?
Keep it simple and digestible. As much as possible, make your messages short and concise. Balance personalization with the essential content. Use visuals (such as graphics, emojis, charts) if necessary.
Conducting online classes should not hinder you from communicating with your students. In fact, it is an opportunity to be more intentional in communicating and establishing human connection despite the distance. Remember that learning is a social activity and that acknowledging your students’ need for communication is of utmost importance. You can easily send e-mails to your students because of the Google Suite integration in Google Classroom. You can use these features if there are announcements that you would prefer to send through the emails. Here’s how you can do it:
From your Google Classroom page, go to People. You will see all of the Students and Teachers enrolled in that Class.
Click the checkbox under Students to select all students as recipients. Then go to the Actions button.
Click the Actions button and then click the Email button. This will then open a new tab.
From there, write the email you want to send everyone. Once you’re done, press Send.
You can send private emails to your students through Google Classroom as well. This can be particularly useful for situations where you need to communicate with a specific individual or group of students. Here’s how you can do it:
From the People page, go to Students.
Select all of the students you want to send an email to by clicking the checkbox beside their name. If the checkbox beside their name has a check on it, this means the action to be performed will involve them.
Once all of the students have been selected, press the Actions button and click Email. A new tab will appear.
On the new tab, write the email you want to send to the students selected. Press Send when you're done.
The Calendar feature in Google Classroom allows you to tell your students about their learning journey. It also allows your students to know how far along they’ve come in terms of progress within your class, or to set up milestones and upcoming events, deadlines, or activities to help them prepare ahead of time. Here’s how you can set it up:
From your Class home page, go to Classwork.
From Classwork, you should see an option to go to Google Calendar on the upper right. When you click that button, a tab will open directing you to Google Calendar.
You can then create events for that calendar by clicking the Create button on the upper left, then selecting your class Calendar beside the calendar icon to assign it.
